Lot consists of 5 items: (A) 2-page March 1804 ALS from former PA Senator James Ross to NJ Senator Gen. Jonathan Dayton regarding a bill on public lands, two personal money matters, and Pennsylvania political turmoil: “Our state is outdoing its own outdoings, we are fairly within the vortex, and where it will land us god only knows…” Both men were Federalists and involved in countering the Whiskey Rebellion. CONDITION: Very good. Paper framed. Small tear upper edge last page. Slight blurring. (B) Engraving of Ross. CONDITION: Very good. (C) March 1844 appointment to West Point of Thomas K. Jackson of South Carolina signed by William Wilkens, Secretary of War. Jackson graduated 1848, served in the Indian Territory and in Texas convoying trains and scouting, engaged with Apache Indians at the Gila River 1857, resigned 1861, served as Major and Chief Commissary-General to CS Gen. A.S. Johnston as Commissary Subsistence. Died 1902. CONDITION: Excellent. (D) 1828 New York Canal Fund check signed by W.L. Marcy, later New York Governor. CONDITION: Good. Slight blotting to signature. Small tear top right edge. (E) 1814 copy book of John Macklin, Kittanning, PA. Nice example of a schoolboy copy book with repeated practice of the alphabet, moral maxims, etc. James Ross, William Wilkins, W.L. Mary with JSA ALOA. CONDTION: Very good. Minor folds or chips to corners.
