Large flag, approximately 6 foot hoist by 8 foot fly, consisting of a blue wool bunting canton bearing 13 5-point stars of cotton broadcloth and a ground of 13 alternating stripes (7 red and 6 white) of bunting, the stripes connected with flat-felled seams, completely hand-sewn with running stitches. Heavy damage and loss to the blue canton, much of the original bunting replaced with blue-dyed cotton cloth. Various rents, losses or holes in the stripes. The edging of the hoist made of doubled-over, cotton canvas with hand-worked grommets. Probably a mid-19th century naval ensign, possibly even earlier. Worthy of restoration.
