France, late 19th century, an unusual coin activated automaton featuring a gentleman with a composition face and tin top hat standing in front of a table with a checkerboard on top. When operated he raises his bisque hands to reveal a blank game board, then lowers the box and raises it again to display a ball that has magically appeared. The figure and table are mounted to a brass faux floor atop a oak box, which contains the musical brass clockworks. Includes original wood box with paper instruction attached to lid.
