Leo Moss was an untrained black American folk doll artist from Macon, Ga., who worked in the early 1900s. It is speculated that he made fewer than 100 dolls. All were individually sculpted from papier-mâché, supposedly using wallpaper scraps. This doll has a flange head incised L.M. with curly molded black hair, inset glass eyes, chubby cheeks, dimples, broad nose and a closed mouth; black cloth body with composition arms and legs; vintage cotton dress with lace and ruffle trim, missing one shoe and sock. Quite a sought-after doll!
