This stunning bronze, shoulderless bust of Napoleon I is signed by Jean-Antoine Houdon (French, 1741-1828), the preeminent sculptor of the French Enlightenment. Inscribed on the right side legend reads: La Majeste/L’Empereur/et Roy/ Fait l’Apres Nature/St. Cloud/1806/Houdon Fit. Circa 1806. It depicts Napoleon with tousled hair and a headband. The beautiful patina is almost museum quality. There is the slightest scratch on his left cheek.
