For Khartoum. Ovoid in form with central patch of crocodile hide surmounted over a brass riband reading: Khartoum and the date below reading: 1884-85. Shield measures: 44" x 15-1/4". This shield commemorates the successful siege of Khartoum by the Mahdi army against the Egyptian government in 1885. It was during this siege that Charles Gordon was killed.
