Overall length, blade open, 12-1/2", blade length 5-3/8". Circa 1840. Spear point, large swedge on each side. Stamped on blade "J. Hinchliffs Sheffield". Also stamped on haft "J. Hinchliffe Celebrated Bowie Knife". Blade pitted overall with light to medium pitting, modern sharpening marks on edge. German silver mounts. Crossguard is one of classic design used on large folding Bowies. German silver coffin pommel depicting half horse, half alligator. Cow horn scales, beautifully aged, decorated with four rivets on each side, shield shaped name plate on left side. Lockback style in good working condition.
