Circa 1850. The top of the match safe is inlaid with a beautiful piece of rose quartz. Rose colored quartz is the most sought after of all the colors. The front of the match safe has a gold quartz inlaid panel 1-5/8" high and 1" across. The design incorporates five separate piece of gold quartz, including four corners in rose color and the diamond center section in grey color. The gold is beautifully engraved on both sides and edges with floral and geometric designs; back panel is also engraved at the top with a hunter shooting at a rearing bear. The bear is the symbolic animal representing the state of California. Everything is in very fine condition; a few very minor chips to the gold quartz. This piece is early in the period of fabrication as the law had not yet come in where solid gold had to be marked as to how many karats in quality.
