Circa 1853. Size No. 18. Engraved on lid of front outside with the California state seal, surrounded by beautiful floral engraving. Lid on the back engraved in the center with a standing Native American holding a bow, surrounded by various other symbols. Outer perimeter engraved with floral and scroll designs. All in fine condition. Inside of the front lid engraved "E. Davis Ophir Cal. Gold". Ophir was a boomtown of the California Gold Rush. Originally named The Spanish Corral in 1849, Ophir received its Biblical name Ophir, the source of King Solomon's treasures, in 1850 because of the rich gold placer mining in the area. In 1852 it was the center of the local gold mining industry, and the most populous town in the county. It grew to over 500 families by 1853. Watch chain has six large links, all white gold quartz on each side. Quartz in very good condition. Large spinner style fob with white quartz in fine condition. Button hole bar with two panels of grey quartz.
