Comprised of: 1) Pair of company grade, infantry officer's epaulettes of the state of Virginia, Mexican War-Confederacy period of use. Straps of broad, silver lace edged with silver bulllion and ending in solid silver crescents, also edged with broad bullion, with 3/8 inch diameter silver bullion fringes. Each epaulette has a small, convex, silvered button bearing the Virginia arms and motto: “SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" [Thus Always to Tyrants]; no backmarks. Red morroco leather lining under straps with padded silk lining under the crescents. Attachment hook/mounting bar on each strap underside, corresponding with the button above, of silvered brass (indicating right or left respectively) and bearing maker's mark "HE". Crescent linings both bear later ink inscriptions: "CPT.", although the rank device for such is now missing on the top of the strap. on undersides with attachments marked France, right and left. Written in blue ink - C P T. Possible Confederate import epaulettes. Moderate wear with some bullion missing or frayed, edge sewing between strap and lining coming undone on one side of the RIGHT-marked epaulette. Fair to good condition. 2) Pair of 1830s-40s company officer’s epaulettes with gold bullion fringe, gold lace strap ending in gilded brass crescent with 3/8 in. diameter bullion fringe. Padded underside with yellow silk lining and brass hook for shoulder attachment. Probably French-made for the American market. Dark spots, stains and undersides needing sewn together in fair to good condition.
