The framed stocking of Queen Caroline, consort of King George IV of Britain. Princess Caroline of Brunswick (1768) wed George, the Prince of Wales in 1795 and became Queen on January 29, 1821 until her death in 1821. The frame-knit, white (now cream-colored) silk stocking is correct for the period of her adult life and bears a laundry inventory number worked in red silk thread at top, as follows: [crown?]/3/24. The stocking also shows fine clocking work along the ankle area. Some light foxing and staining to the stocking. Pressure-mounted in a frame bearing gold paper labels: “Pure Silk Stocking, Over 100 Years Old, Worn by Queen Caroline, 1768-1821”. Label below reading: “Loaned by the Manufacturers of Falcon Stockings”. Framed on a black background under glass in a gilded frame. Showing age wear and minor chips to frame.
