Oil on canvas, 18-3/4" x 13" on original strainer, unlined within later carved and gilded frame. Painting of Prince Christian IX (1818-1906) while a general in Danish service at the time of the First Schleswig War. Although the artist is unknown, this highly accurate painting that appears to be of the period shows the mounted Christian attended with a mounted attendant reviewing a unit of cuirassiers. Christian later acceded to the Danish throne in 1863 as King Christian IX.
