The firm of R.F. Segley in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is well known to most collectors of custom sporting rifles. A cottage industry in the 1930's utilizing surplus U.S. Model 1903 auctions turning out beautiful custom sporters. Trademark characteristics of this rifle are the large banded ramp front sight, the middle barrel band that goes through the stock and holds the front swivel, lack of any provision for rear sight, Lyman 48 peep sight has a hidden G&H style scope rail mounted. Top of barrel is stamped "R.F. Segley, Inc. Phila. Pa. USA". The custom walnut stock has the Segley profile Schnoble forend tip. Large checkered pistol grip with cap, straight comb with flute, a period JC Higgins red rubber pad was added, has an l.o.p. of 13-1/2". Has an ME reading of 1 and a TE reading of 4. The frame is very early having originally been manufactured in 1905. The barrel and frame retains approximately 95% of the reapplied blued finish done at time of conversion, thinning in a few spots. The front sight has taken on a strong tone. The bolt is scalloped and swept like an A4 sniper. The original floor plate and trigger guard retain approximately 50% blue. Stock is very good to excellent. Some wear to checkering and thinness, but extremely clean. Has a perfect action and strong rifled bore. Segley put out his own catalog for conversions that he was producing in the 1930's. This is an excellent example.
