Overall length of 25-1/4". Late 17th century. Only one other pair is known to exist, also by Joseph Molas. Twin steel three stage over-under barrels deeply stamped "JOSEPH / MOLAS" on top of both barrels near breeches. Brass rings around each muzzle. Barrels are separated on each side by wooden forend with a ramrod mounted on the right side. Decorated twin Miquelet locks with clamshell decorations on face of both pans. Plain walnut stock decorated with carved relief moldings on both sides of forend and carved around both locks. Both sides of grip around barrel tang and on each side of trigger guard are decorated with pierced and engraved brass panels, with detailed decoration. Plain steel trigger guard and double triggers. Excellent condition; barrels retain a grey patina with some darker areas, maker's marks very clear. Locks function properly and both retain a light grey patina with some light freckling. Stock is excellent with a few light scattered marks and minor age cracks. Inlaid brass panels have been polished with some darkening in low areas. This is a rare opportunity to own the most highly decoration double barrel, double lock Spanish Miquelet pistol. This item is from the collection of, described by, and authenticated by Herbert G. Ratner, Jr. CORRECTION: The left external lock spring has been replaced.
