A very delightful “genuine Madame Hendren talking doll” named “ Dolly Reckord” made by the Averill Manufacturing Co. from 1922-1928. It was so successful and popular doll that Averill had to devote a whole factory to this one item. Georgene Averill (aka Madame Hendren) patented the phonograph mechanism which is located in the torso and works by means of a crank and a funnel speaker open to the front. A blue cylinder record 2-1/4” x 1/4” x 1-1/4” cylinder record is inserted and “voila” the doll sings, recites, and prays. There were six cylinders with each doll allowing her to recite nursery rhyme such as “Little Boy Blue,” sing songs such as “London Bridge” and say her prayers. The doll herself is a large 26” tall with a composition shoulder head and lower arms and legs. She has a cloth torso and upper arms and legs with a stitched hip joint. She has her original blonde human hair wig, blue/gray celluloid sleep eyes, open mouth with two upper teeth and tongue. She is marked with an ink stamp on her body: “Genuine Madame Hendren Doll 226 Made in U.S.A.“ She wears her original clothing consisting of an organdy dress trimmed with lace, a panty-slip undergarment and knit socks with ankle strap shoes. As a pleasing bonus, she still retains her original metal necklace identifying her as a Madame Hendren doll. Composition is in excellent condition and has been professionally refinished. The mechanism works and includes 9 cylinders. Also in this lot is a sweet smiling Effanbee “Lovums” baby with basically the same type of mechanism in the torso. The mechanism is in working order but there are no records. It is very unusual to find this model with a phonograph insert. The baby has a composition head and lower limbs with a cloth torso. It is in good condition with composition professionally restored and replaced clothing, but baby still retains its original caracul wig and Effanbee metal bracelet. Two dolls with appeal to both phonograph and doll collectors!

Condition: (Good - Very Good).

Item Dimensions: 26"T.
