An Italian burgonet, the skull forged in one piece together with the brim, in the Cabasset form. Roped edges engraved around brim. Old replacement hinged cheek pieces with seven holes in each, closing under the brim. Surrounded by brass lining rivets and turned-under edges. Engraved on both sides with the highly stylized fleur-de-lis of Florence, similar to that of the Royal Guard of the Medici family who ruled Florence during this period. Circa 1620. Good amounts of original blue mixed with a nice brown patina overall. There are a few minor dents and some minor de-lamination and scattered marks from use. This item is from the collection of, described by, and authenticated by Herbert G. Ratner, Jr.
AN ITALIAN BURGONET, POSSIBLY FOR THE MEDICI GUARD.
