Circa 1852-1860’s. 6-9/16” long closed, 12-1/4” fully open. Spear point blade with lockback mechanism, marked on tang "SAMUEL/GILL/SHEFFIELD"; faded hand written ink notation on the blade’s obverse “K 76 2-25” may be a salesman's or other inventory number. Buffalo horn handle scales with large nickel silver bolsters; ornate, engraved silver inlay in the form of a cornucopia and two inlaid mother of pearl discs in obverse scale. Blade with its original glazed finish, scattered spotting, appears unused. Horn scales with a few small pin cracks, minor insect damage to the reverse scale. Small cracks and dents in silver inlay. Ex. George Taylor, David Lennon collections. Samuel Gill first appears in the 1852 Sheffield Directory with a location in Hollis Croft, and remained in that business off-and-on for most of the century’s remainder. Tweedale, Geoffrey.
