Mexican War era. Curved blade with partial single-fullers and blued and gilt decorated panels on both sides featuring florals and military motifs. Silver-plated brass reverse-P hilt with languettes, the right side with a relief eagle. Knuckle bow is decorated with a chased suit of armor in high relief. Detailed eagles head pommel with detailed stippling on beak and engraving on feathers. Black leather-wrapped grip with three strands of copper wire. Complete with an extraordinary silver-plated brass scabbard with chased foliage designs and cast brass French style panels chased with designs of weapons and armor. Very good condition. Blade retains about 80-90% bright blue and gilt finishes with some fading and freckling, the polished portion retains a spotted grey patina. Hilt is slightly loose, and retains generous traces of silver finish, especially in protected areas, brass is otherwise unpolished. Scabbard shows a matching patina with some scattered dents, minor repairs, and wear to cast panels. This is a highly decorated and unique sword, with more military motifs than normally encountered.
