"Victorian Bicycle Advertisement". James Montgomery Flagg (American, 1877 to 1960). Whitewash, gouache, and charcoal on paper. Signed "James Montgomery Flagg" at lower left. Original bicycle advertisement print, probably done for a magazine, but framed and made into poster form to hang in a storefront window. Flagg studied at the Art Student’s League in NYC. He created the iconic “I Want You” illustration of Uncle Sam for the US Army recruiting poster. Flagg’s commissions ranged from cartoons, magazine covers and advertisements to portraits- where his models were often celebrities or the upper class.
