"Cape Ann Street to the Ocean in Gloucester, MA". Melville Stark (American, 1903 to 1987). Signed "M. Stark" at lower right and dated, '85. A leading figure in the art history of eastern Pennsylvania; Stark was a plein-air painter, teacher and devoted promoter of the Allentown arts scene. He studied art at UPENN and the Philadelphia Museum School, remaining loyal to the Impressionistic style throughout his career. A key painter at the artist’s colony in Rockport, MA, Stark returned to PA to teach at Muhlenberg College and at the Baum School of Art in Allentown. Certification of authenticity signed by the artist’s son on reverse.
