"Winter in Washington Square". Johann Berthelsen (Danish/American, 1883 to 1969). Signed "Johann Berthelsen" at lower right. Oil on board image of a winter scene in Washington Square. American Impressionist; entirely self-taught, a dedicated and prolific artist. Berthelsen was influenced by his friendships with artists’ Svend Svendsen and Wayman Adams. Of all the subjects he painted, Berthelsen is most identified with the place he loved most- New York City. His pastels and watercolors of his favorite spaces, particularly Central Park, exhibited to excellent reviews, gaining him membership to the American Watercolor Society in 1926. His masterful use of light and shadow give his work a mystical, almost atmospheric quality. Berthelsen’s fascination with the city resonates in his work like a poetic longing between artist and muse. His snow scenes are painted with draftsman precision and loaded with all the moody and romantic emotion of New York City. Member Salmagundi Club, and Allied American Artists. Provenance: From the estate of the artist.
