"Edgar Allen Poe's Townhouse at Twilight". Leon Louis Dolice (Austrian American, 1892 to 1960). A hauntingly moody depiction of Edgar Allen Poe’s townhouse in Philadelphia at twilight with the cityscape silhouette in the background and ravens perched atop the telephone wires. Dolice spent much of his youth traveling through Europe studying the works of the Masters. He came to New York in 1920, taking solace in the Bohemian utopia of Greenwich Village. Hanging out with artists’ George Luks and Herb Roth, Dolice devoted all his time to chronicling the architecture, back alley-ways, dock scenes and other noir spaces that were disappearing quickly in a fast-changing Manhattan. Dolice expanded his travels to other historical landmark cities such as Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Chicago. Beginning in the 1930s Dolice devoted some ten years to pastels, creating a series of threatened NYC landmarks. His work is in the collections of The Print Club of Philadelphia and The New York Historical Society; Dolice exhibited at The Montauk Artists’ Association, Hofstra Museum and Tribeca Gallery. Picture is in the original Philadelphia matting with French lining.
