"Hudson River School". George Gunther Hartwick (American, circa 1840s-1889). Signed "G.G.H." in the lower right side within the fallen tree. Gunther Hartwick carried on in the traditions of 17th century Dutch painters. His outstanding compositions, in this case, the image of a father and his young son out on an overlook, painted circa 1860, typifies the imagery of the 1860-1865 artists in the Catskill Mountains. Perfect balance and composition, excellent brushstrokes and technique- the detailing in the foliage and rocks is superb in this wonderful painting. Hartwick was active in the 1840s in New Haven, Connecticut. He exhibited in the American Art Union in 1849 and at the National Academy of Design.
