Lot contains: (A) U.S. Marine Corps "Advance Pay List A...end[in]g. 31 December 1813", partly-printed, columnar format payroll manuscript, 1 page, oblong elephant folio 15 x 22 1/4 inches) , backed with Japanese tissue, with docketing above exposed on recto, some losses in folds and edges, light toning and foxing, fair. Payroll form in which 28 Marine enlisted men are listed, the service periods and wages earned are recorded, and the amount paid out to them by Major Daniel Carmack, to which they have signed their names or made their marks in acknowledgement. (B) A similar payroll document for a detachment of 27 Marines receiving payment from Major Carmack, on same partly-printed form, also backed with tissue and having docketing on verso exposed: "(Duplicate) Pay Roll No. 1...end[in]g. 31st March 1814. Same condition and size. (C) Another U.S. Marine Corps Payroll, columnar form of slightly different form and size, partly printed, with 31 Marines acknowledging receipt of funds from "JOHN CRABB Pay Master of the Marine Corps", 1 page, elephant folio (19 x 26 inches), backed with Japanese tissue with docketing exposed: "Pay Roll No. 23 at H. Qtr. 31 March 1816"; with light toning, chipping and losses to edges, with mending to tears within, toned, and chipping, fair. (D) An larger, partly-printed payroll form, with 44 Marines acknowledging receipt of pay from "JOSEPH L. KUHN, Pay-Master of the Marine Corps", 29 1/2 x 23 1/2 inches, backed with Japanese tissue with mends to separated folds, toning, and extensive chipping loss along upper margin not affecting text, fair. Signed and dated along lower, righthand margin, "Samuel Edminster Witness / Capt[ain] Com[mandin]g. / Marine Barracks Portsmouth N.H. /July 1st. 1824" From the Walter O'Connor collection.
