Fine stub Damascus barrels are 30" long, and are engraved "W. Golden, Cross Church St, Huddersfield" on swamped game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs. Round bodied lockfast action with eccentric hinge pin providing slide and drop feature with breech end of barrels engaging bosses which protrude from breech face, and lug at rear of lump, sliding under standing breech when closed. Action is fitted with peninsula back spring locks having round bodied serpentine hammers with tall spurs. Action and locks are engraved with 60% coverage exceptionally well cut varying sized open shaded scroll. "W. Golden" is at the top of each lockplate, and bottom of action is engraved "Dougall's," "Patent Lockfast". Blued trigger guard with matching scroll on bow has serial number on tang. Very finely stump figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-3/8" over checkered wood butt with steel heel and toe plates. Matching short splinter forend with metal tip is fully checkered, and mounts to barrels with flush fitting side bolt through shaped and engraved escutcheons. Gun is housed in its original two tier leather case lined in green cloth with small paper William Golden label in lid. A green japanned lift out metal box contains 25 or so Eley Brothers paper pinfire cases, with another 20 or so loaded cartridges. Other accessories include a tin of buckshot marked "Red Fire", and a tin of smaller shot marked "Green Fire", along with a case extractor, and two brass powder shot measures with boxwood handles. CONDITION: Excellent. Original, as found. Barrels retain approximately 90% original brown with superb definition to attractive pattern. Action and locks retain approximately 90% original case hardening color with a hint of silvering on high edges and lock tails. Trigger guard retains 85% original blue with flaking and some silvering at grip. Stocks retain nearly all of their original hand rubbed oil finish, which is quite dry, and is sprinkled with light scratches with a few deeper marks and dings. Checkering is still light in color with some whiting or chalk on forend and left side of grip. Bores are fine with some light pitting toward breech ends (may clean). Rear portion of top tang is cracked across screw hole. Case leather is coming unstitched. Hasp is missing. Interior cloth is good. Label is very fine, still bright white. Cartridges are very fine, lightly toned. High quality pinfires are seldom found, most were converted to centerfire. A fine condition specimen like this is a true rarity. MGM46.
