(ca 1939) This superb "Golden Age" full nitro rifle has 23" chopper lump barrels with typical H&H style quarter rib holding one standing leaf express rear sight marked for 50 yards. It is also fitted with claw scope bases. Matching front ramp holds large silver bead under slip-on sight protector. Mid rib is engraved ".577 Bore 3" Case". Tops of barrels are engraved "Holland & Holland. 98. New Bond Street, London." Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for .577 3", 100 grains cordite and 750 grain bullet. Serial numbers are on bottoms of barrels and a sling loop is soldered to bottom rib which is engraved "Made in England" at rear where covered by forend. Case hardened action with top strap extending over comb features non-automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), sliding third fastener, bushed strikers, reinforcement to sides, and double triggers (front articulated). Typical "Royal" action back spring locks by Brasier, are hand detachable, and have gold band tumbler end cocking indicators. Action has only small scroll and line border engraving with "Holland & Holland" on each lockplate, and "Royal" "Model" on bottom. Single beaded trigger guard is blued, and has serial number on tang which extends to trap grip cap which contains spare front sight. Very nicely marbled and lightly figured European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14 - 1/4" over Silver type pad. Stock features classic Holland styling with shadow line right hand cheekpiece, drop points, and point pattern checkering at grip with reverse curve to rear border. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. Rifle has been fitted with Hensoldt Diasta 4 X scope with three post reticle in soldered on claw rings. Rear is adjustable for windage and adjustment screws are engraved "Holland & Holland". Tube is engraved "Holland & Holland" and with rifles serial number. Weight: 12 lbs. 5 oz. Rifle and scope are housed in high quality oak and leather case with brass corners which has brown canvas leather trimmed outer cover. Case is lined in scarlet cloth, and has H&H gold embossed black leather label in lid. Case contains suede leather backed brown leather carrying strap, H&H round oil bottle, W R marked snap caps, 2 piece ebony and German silver cleaning rod with brush and two mops in leather wallet, H & H cleaning patches and a small jar of H & H marked Rangoon jelly. A dusting brush, spare lock screw and case key are in covered compartment. CONDITION: Very fine, as partially refinished. Barrels retain nearly all of a London quality re-black, lettering slightly softened. Action retains 20-30% original case hardening color, and lockplates retain over 80% of their color. Action and locks have some cleaned flecking overall. Renewed blue of top lever is somewhat silvered on thumbpiece, and trigger guard is silvered on edges of bow and at grip. Stock retains nearly all of a hand rubbed oil finish with a few very light marks, edges somewhat softened. Checkering is worn, and has not been re-cut. Bores are excellent, bright, with sharp rifling throughout. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Ejectors are in time. Scope has a few minor marks in exterior lacquer, optically clear. Case leather is excellent, with a few marks and scuffs, as protected by its outer cover, which is very fine, with some scuffs. Interior cloth is excellent with some marks and rubs. Label is bright and clear. Accessories are excellent. A great handling, well balanced stopping rifle, with perfect dimensions for its intended target. MGM170.
