This interesting sword has a nickel-plated slightly curved blade with etched panels on both side, the right side featuring patriotic arms motifs and an American eagle, the other with scrolls, large "U.S.", arms motifs, and marked "THE/M.C. LILLEY/& CO./COLUMBUS, O." on ricasso. Cast brass French Model 1822 cavalry officer's hilt with relief acanthus leaf designs, per regulations after 1860. Horn grip decorated with twisted brass wire. Complete with steel scabbard with brass mounts, inscribed "PRESENTED TO/Lieutenant S. Elkan./ON/December 22, 1902./BY THE/Recruits of the First Battery." between hanging mounts. Also includes period brown leather sword knot. Blade excellent with only some very light scabbard marks. Hilt retains an unpolished mellow patina, grip excellent. Scabbard excellent with a few light marks from use and a couple small dents. Includes an archive of information on Lieutenant Elkan of the First Light Artillery Battery, attached to the National Guard Headquarters in New York City. Included are copies of all of his service records and War Department files. This is a very attractive sword to a documents early 20th century Lieutenant.
