Nathan Starr contracted for 5,000 horsemen's sabers in 1812. Minor changes were introduced after the first 1,000 and the contract eventually expanded to 10,000 of this modified pattern. Standard configuration, wood hilt, iron guard, leather covered wood grip. See Peterson, number 29. Proofmark obverse at base of blade, P/ HHP/ N. STARR with small circle underneath, "P" on knuckleguard. CONDITION: Blade is smooth gray metal mixed with dark gray. Good tip, but minor nicks to edge starting ten inches from tip and scattered freckling on reverse about nine inches from tip. Hilt is tight. Pommel, backstrap, and knuckleguard are smooth but brown. Markings are crisp. Leather grip wrap is replaced.
