Lot consists of" two mid-19th century powder kegs. (A) Wood bound with five rounded lapped bands at each end. 9" x 6-1/4" wood screw fill hole. Black stencil on bottom reading, "TRYON / 34." CONDITION: Very good. Light brown color with scattered wear spots, small stains. Tack repair to one band. Top and bottom with expected loss of finish, small stains, etc. Part of a cardboard tag still attached with a red tack on top next to wood screw plug. (B) Blue painted, iron bound keg canteen. 10" long; 5-3/4" diameter at ends; about 6" at midpoint. Stopper in place. Raised rectangular mouth reinforcement on bung stave. Ends with incised border lines. CONDITION: Good. Much wear to paint with dark wood surface most evident with light traces of blue alongside bands where shielded from wear. Side of one end bent inward. Other end with 1" chip to end of stave. Mouth reinforcement raised with partial gap at one end. Wood pegs at edge of each side with partial narrow leather carrying strap still attached to one. Old screw at edge of one end piece with white painted inventory or collection number "818." SR A good pair of early nineteenth century kegs. (SR)
