Seldom encountered Spandau 1917 manufactured MG-08 Maxim with matching numbered receiver, barrel jacket, feed block, top cover, rear sight, safety bar, backplate, and crosshead. Fusee cover is unnumbered. The lower feed block actuator arm, lock, and oiler caps do not match. Wood thumb piece not present on water fill cap. Sled mount is 1917 dated and repainted a long time ago, with re-covered black leather pads. Muzzle shield is a reproduction. Included is an original World War I belt loading machine in original wooded box including mounting bracket and belt tool. Original blank firing adapter in its original can, two nonmatching 8mm German Nazi marked barrels, and short (57 usable pockets) original brass tabbed World War I German belt are also included. Weimar era ZF-12 scope in original brown leather case is also included with this lot. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is fine original finish thinning to a gray patina with some areas turning brown, with attractive dark green repainted finish over on water jacket which has several small dings. Wood handles are very fine with typical dings and but still are very attractive. Mechanics are crisp. Bore of Weimar eagle marked barrel with “S” is near excellent shiny and bright. Lock is number 5463 and extremely fine. Sled retains over 95% green paint with fine mechanics. The Maxim MG-08 is one of the most recognizable weapons of World War I, and remained in service albeit in a rear security role with the Germans through the end of World War II. In recent years there have been very successful conversions of the MG-08 to fire 7.62 Russian ammunition. It is a great machine gun to take to the range or as a display piece. No collection of World War I machine guns is complete without a German MG-08. From the estate of noted cartridge collector and World War II veteran William H. Woodin. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2020-05-071
