James Richardson is recorded as working in Manchester between 1793 and 1830. Browned Damascus barrels with blade front sight, concave rib. Top of barrels with "RICHARDSON" and "MANCHESTER". View and proof marks for black powder loads also on top. Proofs and maker stamps on barrels spurious. Bottom of barrels with "TWISTED" and "D&M". Hooked breeches. Top tang with line engraving at breech, rays, and stand of arms. Ramrod with worm possibly the original. Barrels retained by a single key. Waterproof pans with roller bearing frizzens which are attractively scalloped. Fire blued frizzen springs. Filed swan neck cocks lightly engraved with florals. Locks engraved with rays and two stands of arms at rear. One hammer screw possibly replaced. Lock screw replaced. When locks detached from stock, it becomes clear that this pistol is restocked, with lock inletting not relieved for lock cleat. Trigger guard with stand of arms and border engraving, pineapple finial, and long tang. Stocks are a well marbled wood with flattened sides. Comes in a wooden case with accessories comprising a bag flask with repousse designs of stars and dots, dual screwdrivers, bullet mold with sprue cutter marked for 16 gauge, and a rectangular oiler. Case is lined in green baize and a later addition. CONDITION: Excellent as partly reconditioned. Barrels retain the vast majority of an old rebrown with some pitting near breech from firing and some silvering from where gun sat in case. Stocks are excellent as carefully cleaned and repaired. Wood fill repair at right side of tang, approximately 1/2" long. Trigger guard, finial, and tang retain much of their blue finish, with some silvering to edges and mixing with brown age patina. Accessories are very good, showing signs of age related staining and period use. Action works appropriately when operated by hand, bores are very good, clean, with a minimum of oxidation. EW
