Circa 1900. A vintage game gun with 29" nitro proofed, chopper lump, blued barrels with ejectors and 2 - 3/4" chambers. Barrels furnished with a slightly raised concave rib and a third bite locking fastener. Rib is fit with a small round brass mid bead and a larger white round front bead and a gold "1" near breech. Rib reads "JAMES WOODWARD & SONS 64 ST. JAMSES'S STREET. LONDON. S.W.", "MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH FLUID PRESSED STEEL.". Barrel flats with nitro proof stamp, "1 1/8 oz. MAXIMUM", and "12". Tubes stamped "5454", "J.W.&S", and "WHITWORTH STEEL". Barrels with light border engraving at breech. Barrels are also fit with choke tubes. The sidelock action with faded case colors is adorned with tight scroll, gold line cocking indicators, disk set strikers, third fastener, and is engraved "J. WOODWARD & SONS" in banner near action bar. Action bottom is engraved with tight scroll and reads "WOODWARDS SINGLE TRIGGER". Single mechanical trigger is protected by a scroll-engraved trigger guard which extends to a long bottom strap. Bottom strap is engraved with matching scroll and the serial number. Top lever is blacked and scroll engraved with a checkered thumb and with a gold "1" inlaid. The checkered and engraved slide safe are functional and the word "SAFE" is in gold. Gun is non-auto safe. The straight grained stock with double drop points is built with a semi-pistol grip and is finely sharp checkered. Grip with hard rubber grip cap. Belly of stock with silver oval with crown and "EB" engraved. Butt stock is completed by a hard orange rubber pad. Splinter forend with matched sharp checkering and checkered Anson push button release with engraved escutcheon bearing a gold "1". Interior iron metal with number "1" and "5454 engraved. Gun resides in a green canvas case with white and black paper trade label. Case comes with a pair of nickel plated snap caps. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels retain mostly all of their color and bores are bright. Action, trigger, and ejectors are good. Stock good with showing some evidence of flaking behind left and right lock. Forend very good. Case very good. Nice gun.
