Circa 1990. A lovely and modern side by side game gun with 27" chopper lump nitro proof blued steel barrels. Barrels built with Holland & Holland styled assisted opening mechanism, ejectors, and 2 - 3/4" chambers. Chokes are Full on left and Improved Modified on right. Rib is smooth, concave, tapered with small round brass front bead and reads "John Wilkes" (in gold) and "79. Beak Street. London. W1.". The case colored sidelock action with gold line cocking indicators in the Holland style is handsomely engraved by master engraver Ken Hunt and is triple signed: once on each lock plate and again at action bottom "K.C. Hunt", "90". At bottom the master's name is completely spelled out. The left lock plate is engraved with flying pheasants flying over field, right lock plate with grouse flying over heather, and bottom of action is engraved with mallard coming for landing over pond. Lock plates with "John Wilkes" in gold. All game scenes and action with supporting acanthus scroll. Top lever and slide safe are both nitre blued, engraved, and checkered. "SAFE" in gold. Double triggers are protected by a right hand rolled edged nitre blued scroll engraved guard that extends to its full length bottom strap with matched scroll engraving and serial number engraved in a banner. Gun is stocked to the fences with a lovely piece of well figured reddish brown walnut. Stock with drop points, sharp, finely checkered English straight hand diamond grip, gold oval, and finished with a checkered butt. The matched checkered splinter forend has been fit with case color hardened exterior metal and Anson release. Interior iron metal is also case color hardened and with serial number. Gun resides in a dark brown leather case with brass corners and canvas outer. Case is furnished with black and gold leather John Wilkes trade label, nylon cleaning rod, gold tone snap caps, gold tone round oil bottles, turn screws, cleaning accessories and tools. CONDITION: Excellent, like new. Barrels retain basically all of their color. Bores are bright. Action, triggers, and ejectors operate well. Stock is excellent. Forend is very good with mark from case storage. Excellent Gun and Package.
CORRECTION: The checkering has been recut at the wrist.
