This 1863 dated rifle-musket is is a product of the Welch, Brown and Company of Norfolk, Connecticut where they produced about 18,000 longarms under U.S. government contract. Walnut stock is marked with "AHA" and "ELA" cartouches. Lockplate is strongly stamped with “U.S. / NORFOLK” under the bolster and is dated “1863” on the tail, with a light stamp of a spreadwinged eagle in front of the hammer. Breech area stamped “1863 on the top flat. Government proof marks “V / P / (Eagle Head)” on the side along with "W.JL.D." on left side bottom barrel facet. Buttplate marked with “U.S.”. CONDITION: Mechanics are crisp and strong. Musket has been cleaned bright. Rear sight screw and leaf replaced. Modern replacement hammer. Markings very good on barrel, stock and lock. All wood in front of rearmost band has been recently replaced. Ramrod is a replacement. Nosecap heavily pitted.
