Offered is a regulation M1895 enlisted forage cap. This was the U.S. Army's first transition to a visor cap after leaving the traditional kepi design. Made of dark blue wool with enameled leather visor bound with patent leather, and a tarred leather chinstrap. Hat retains original russet brown leather sweatband. Inside of crown is lined with black silk and maker marked "M.C. LILLEY CO. COLUMBUS OHIO". Gold gilt federal regulation eagle buttons to the sides with "D" Company, 24th Infantry insignia affixed. The 24th was primarily made up of African-American soldiers. In 1898 the 24th Infantry deployed to Cuba as part of the U.S. Expeditionary Force in the Spanish–American War and participated in the storming of the Spanish fortress in the Battle of El Caney and the Battle of San Juan Hill. CONDITION: Shows no mothing or fading, but is missing the four black metal ventilation eyelets.
