Lock of Mary Todd Lincoln’s hair tied with narrow knotted red ribbon, matted, glassed and framed in a “chess players” thermoplastic photographic case with a facing 3/4" length standing image. Formerly in the collection of Dr. John K. Lattimer. One end of the ribbon has faded. Some graying to the strands. Born in 1818 to a wealthy, slave-holding Kentucky family, she married Lincoln in 1842, and bore 4 sons, only 2 of whom lived to adulthood and only 1 survived his parents. She was devoted to her husband, but her spending habits during the war were a source of trouble and her health, both physical and psychological, was precarious; the latter exacerbated by her presence beside her husband when he was assassinated in 1865. CONDITION: Very good. A scarce memento of the President’s spouse from a well known collection.
