For another Hutton-signed silver hilt with this exact pierced guard, see pgs. 514-515 of "American Silver-Hilted, Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords, Volume II" by Daniel D. Hartzler. The straight single-edged blade features a wide single fuller. Blued 11 - 1/2" panels on top of blade on both sides. Decorated with gilded engraved liberty caps, patriotic shields, cannons and polearms. Classic Hutton pierced guard with pierced heart and scalloped edges. Attractive and early faceted 5-stage pillow pommel. Reeded ivory grip. CONDITION: Blade retains a mostly light grey patina, some scattered freckling. Traces of blued finish now turned mostly grey. Generous gilt in engraved designs. One nick to edge towards ricasso. Hilt retains what appears to be gilt wash, pommel a mostly pewter color. Capstan perhaps a period replacement. Hilt is tight to blade. A very attractive New York pillow pommel. DMG
