(English, 1763-1804). 27'' x 23'' framed; 19 - 1/4'' x 15 - 1/2'' sight. Oil on canvas of sheep herders in working attire, hats and hiking boots, under a large tree. Two sheep are in repose, and a terrier-type dog with a contended expression rests alongside the men, who appear to be gazing up at something in the tree. A shepherd's staff lies on a rock, suggesting the men are taking a break from work. A very well-detailed artwork, with great attention paid to the foliage. Barely legible signature at lower right appears to say G. Morland. Very ornate, heavy gilt frame appears to be original, with a few areas of surface loss to the gilt- an easy touchup job. Also, frame exhibits a number of short, old cracks around the edge and is missing a portion of the acanthus decoration above the shell at the top of the frame. Tag on verso says George Moreland (sic.). Morland was known for his masterful, informal depictions of pastoral subjects, and for his ability to compose a relaxed, uncluttered scene. The finest of his pictures were produced between 1790 and 1794. His painting depicting the interior of a stable, which is displayed in the National Gallery in London, is described by some as a masterpiece. Although undeniably talented, Morland's wildly extravagant lifestyle eventually caught up with him, and he spent his final years dodging creditors and even spending time in debtors prison.
