PHENOMENAL CARVED CAROUSEL LION ATTRIBUTED TO DENTZEL CAROUSEL COMPANY

Circa 1890–1910, attributed to the Dentzel Carousel Company, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, monumental carved and painted wood menagerie carousel lion modeled in a striding pose with head dramatically raised and mouth open, featuring inset glass eyes, carved teeth and tongue, and an exceptionally deep, flowing mane carved in high relief. The lion is fitted with an elaborate carved saddle and polychrome-decorated trappings incorporating scrollwork and a sculptural lion-mask terminal with inset glass eyes and pendant tassel, together with leather tack and metal stirrup. The naturalistic modeling, substantial scale, elaborate secondary carving and restrained ornament are characteristic of the Philadelphia carousel tradition and consistent with known Dentzel menagerie figures. Mounted on a later shaped wooden display platform. CONDITION: Old historic surface. Scattered age cracks, separations, abrasions and losses consistent with age and extensive amusement use; saddle and trappings retain areas of older polychrome decoration with expected wear and surface loss; wear and restoration visible to the muzzle, mouth and extremities. Tack and hardware appear to include both old and possibly replaced components. Later display platform. Overall structurally sound with commanding presence and has the original carousel attachment pins.
