Pre Civil War May 13, 1856 dated letter signed by "Jeffn S Davis" while he was serving as Secretary of War. His signature is on the reverse side docketing portion of a letter that was sent to him by A.K. Craig of the Ordnance Office, Washington, DC. The letter measures approximately 9 - 3/4" x 7 - 3/4" and is written in a fine light ink. Jefferson Davis writes boldly: "The Chief of Ordnance will give further explanation of this case to the committee (sic) on Mil Affairs of the Senate. Its history, and probable consequences not only to the Arsenal, but also to the use of the magazine will be clearly presented (signed) Jeffn S Davis May 13, 1856". Davis is writing in response to Craig's original attached letter which referred to a Bill in the House of Representatives granting right of way to the Iron Mountain Railroad through the Arsenal and other public lands near St. Louis. Apparently the Bill modified an earlier agreement Davis had struck with that company. The letter exhibits period fold lines with light staining and legible writing. Quite displayable with clear signatures. The letter comes with a James Spence Authentication Full Letter of Authenticity, as well as a COA from Early American History Auctions, Inc. CONDITION: Good.
