A rare, matched pair of knitted woolen mittens for a man with connecting strings still attached of the form commonly used in early America during the late 18th through mid-19th century, based on similar archaeological examples, museum specimens and period images. Woven in an alternating pattern ored and brown yarn, likely from madder root (red) and walnuts hulls (brown). Cold weather accessories of this sort rarely survive and this near- pristine pair shows no sign of usage. Found by consignor in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
