The plaque identifies it as a “Wilder’s Patent Salamander Safe,” S. C. Herring, Maker, 139 Water St., New York. The black case with gilt striping, brass hardware, bright green inset panels, and fitted wood interior with two drawers makes it particularly decorative. The “Salamander” name referred to fire-resistant safes, and Herring was an important American safe manufacturer in the 19th century. Appears to be a miniature/sample-size safe, possibly made as a salesman’s demonstration piece or promotional display rather than as a conventional full-size safe. The original-style maker’s plaque and fitted interior are especially desirable features. A striking piece of 19th-century American industrial advertising and craftsmanship, particularly appealing to collectors of salesman’s samples, safes, locks, banking memorabilia, and early American manufactured goods.
