REVOLUTIONARY WAR AMERICAN CHEESE BOX CANTEEN.

This example is on of the classic patterns used by the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. For another, see number 5 on page 60 of "Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. The diameter measures 6 - 1/4". The wooden barrel or cheese box construction is held together by two unevenly cut iron bands. The top has a raised wooden mouthpiece and a wooden plug. The bottom has a raised flat wood rectangle, which allows it to set upright on a table. The canteen is washed with a red paint. PROVENANCE: Ex. Philip Mead Collection CONDITION: Old dry untouched surfaces throughout. Some minor scattered insect damage. A very desirable Revolutionary War pattern.
