SCARCE ETCHED SPETUM, LIKELY OF THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE WITH ORIGINAL HAFT.

Probably German and likely related to the Holy Roman Empire given the Reichsadler design on one side. Of classic form with a 24" central blade with two prongs that measure approximately 4" on the convex edge and a sharply raised medial ridge which rapidly tapers to the point. Acid etched with florals and scroll throughout, with interspersed heads. The dominant figure is a Reichsadler eagle on one side, base with a fleur de lis element which is flanked by a pair of faces (satyr?) facing in. The reverse has a dominant landsknecht soldier, while the base has a vignette of a turbaned man with a the same two faces flanking, this time facing away. Fringe of a much later date. Two languets with five rivets affixing the head to a modern haft. CONDITION: Good, with evidence of care and use throughout a long life. Good delamination visible throughout, particularly at the eagle and Landsknect, with some bending to the flanking prongs, which has caused some cracking. Other age related patina as appropriate, heavier towards the tip and top of one prong. A scarce form with desirable motifs.
