Originally manufactured by Widmann of Philadelphia in the late 1840s, this pattern was purchased by Horstmann in the early 1850s who produced them using the Widmann dies and marketed them as officer swords. This example features a 27" curved blade decorated for just under half of its length with patriotic motifs. The obverse features 5 designs, including a federal eagle with E Pluribus Unum banner and panoply of arms topped with a liberty cap. Reverse displays the slogan "HONOR AND MY COUNTRY". Gebruder Weyersberg king head proof on ricasso. Blade exhibits a moderate gray patina, which is heavier in areas, however, the decorations remain visible. Heavy iron hilt with reverse P knucklebow and thick spiraled iron grip. Thick silhouette eagle head pommel with pronounced nape. Hilt exhibits a chocolate/gray patina but remains menacing. No visible maker mark but falls in the style of a Widmann or Horstmann sword. A menacing example that is seldom encountered. CONDITION: Good.
