Circa 1846-1848. Elegant 7 - 7/8" clip point blade, unmarked, is etched across its face with a spread winged eagle, a cannon, ribands reading "PALO ALTO", banners and scrollwork, as well as UNUM (the remainder of E Pluribus Unum) - all of which is highlighted with gold wash for an impressive effect. Stamped nickel silver scales decorated in an eagle and floral motif adorn the nickel silver frame handle, with 2 mother of pearl inserts on each side. Original embossed Moroccan leather sheath with nickel silver mounts. CONDITION: The blade shows light use and has been lightly cleaned, with most of the fragile gold wash remaining. The handle shows much carry wear, with the lead backing visible in the highlights and one pearl inlay chipped. Sheath with darkened mounts and typical scuffing. 12 - 3/8" overall length. An attractive English bowie capitalizing on patriotic sentiment for the first major victory of the Mexican War. Sheath with colored decoration at center is typical of well-known makers Wragg and Lingard. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
