An exquisite example of a circa 1850s-1860s Civil War era Naval Officer's sword with triple etched blade. The blade is highly etched with patriotic and naval motifs. Each side is lush with various foliage and the obverse features patriotic motifs such as a federal eagle and a panoply of arms with the script "United States Navy" at center. Reverse blade also features a federal eagle as well as an Indian warrior with raised axe, and an anchor. Obverse ricasso is marked "W.H. Horstmann & / Sons / Philadelphia". Gebruder Weyersberg king head on ricasso. Brass hilt with open work guard that features a federal eagle mounted on a fouled anchor. Reverse folding guard functions properly. Pleasing patina throughout with wonderfully feathered backstrap with large eagle head. Grooved grip with slightly loose strands of brass wire. Sword knot affixed to grip. Complete with its shagreen-wrapped scabbard that features brass mounts. Upper mount with wreath engraving, middle mount with anchor engraving, and drag with oak leaf engraving. Upper mount marked "HORSTMANN & SONS MAKERS PHILADA" in a raised scroll. Clip for sword hanger attached to upper mount carry ring. Nice patina throughout scabbard with tight mounts and few traces of original gilding. A very attractive Naval Officer's sword. CONDITION: Good.
