A very nice example of circa 1834-1840s militia officer's sword. The sword features a double-edged blade decorated on each side for over half its length with wonderfully etched patriotic and foliate motifs. The obverse features foliate scrolls that flank a panoply of arms and the reverse features a federal eagle with more foliate scrolls consisting of oak leaves and acorns. Blade remains bright with crisp etchings and very attractive appearance. Maker marked in script but the maker ID is obscured by the languet. Wide spread winged eagle crossguard. Nice mother of pearl grip scales that exhibit a few cracks and chipped edges. Knight head pommel with chain guard. The hilt retains generous amounts of its original gilding. Complete with scabbard marked "N.P. AMES / MAKER / CABOTVILLE MASS". Scabbard features generous amounts of its original gilding with scattered blemishes. A very attractive example of a militia officer's sword. CONDITION: Good.
