A seldom seen regulation Model 1872 officers pillbox hat. Front is adorned with a bullion crossed saber cavalry insignia applied to a wool pillow, and nickeled regimental "2." Hat retains the original gold bullion braided chinstrap held on by period correct "C" cavalry eagle buttons. Inside bears the original polished cotton lining. Period photos show officers on the frontier wearing these primarily for off-duty activities and leisure. CONDITION: Wool is unfaded and solid overall, with only one small moth nip observed. Sweatband was resewn at some point in its existence, with a small section towards the rear of the hat now loose.
