Very nice example of a Model 1832 Foot Artilleryman’s short sword. This example was produced by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Massachusetts and is dated 1844. The artilleryman’s sword features a double-edged steel blade and a solid brass hilt. The blade is marked on the reverse ricasso "U.S /1844 / JH" and "N. P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD" on the obverse ricasso. The reverse face of the crossguard is marked with the initials of the arsenal inspector “W.A.T." and the obverse face of the crossguard is marked "J.H". The brass hilt has the typical fish-scale handle and bold eagles on both sides of the pommel. The sword is complete with its leather and brass scabbard and is secured in a Model 1839 United States Light Artilleryman's white buff belt and US buckle. CONDITION: The blade remains bright and has a pleasant overall finish with light markings and scattered blemishes. There are no chips along the double edges. The brass handle exhibits handling wear with a pleasing patina overall. The leather scabbard exhibits scattered surface creases and cracks but is complete with its brass throat and drag which remain secured to the scabbard body. The drag is slightly loose as evidenced by the missing nails. The belt is a bit dry but very good overall and still flexes with ease. Buckle and other brass exhibits a pleasing patina. A nice Mexican War era example of this regulation sword.
